What is it?
This application aims to generate questions from texts or presentations with the usage of AI system, primarily making use of the power of Large Language Models (LLMs). These models have been trained on huge amounts of text from the web, books, scientific articles, and so on, learning to understand natural language in extremely sophisticated ways.
The Process
- Input: the teacher provides a text (a document or presentation). The text is "digested" by the LLM, which processes its semantic content and the relationships between the information.
- Contextual Understanding: the LLM does not simply recognize keywords, but seeks to understand the overall meaning, key concepts, entities, and logical relationships present in the text. It is able to identify the most relevant information and crucial passages.
- Question Generation: based on this understanding, the LLM generates questions. The type of question can vary based on the instructions ("prompts") provided to the AI generator: in our case, we generate single- or multiple-choice questions.
Benefits
Advantages of Generative AI for Question Generation include:
- Efficiency and Speed:
Drastically reduces the time and effort required to create question sets, especially for long texts.
- Scalability:
Ability to generate a large number of questions for different sections of a text or for different topics.
- Consistency:
Maintains a more consistent style and quality of questions compared to manual generation.
- Key Point Identification:
AI can help highlight important concepts that a human reviewer might have missed.
- Learning Support:
Generated questions can be used for self-assessment, review, exam preparation, or to stimulate class discussion.
Uses
Possible benefits of using quizzes to self-assess students' skills after each lesson:
- Knowledge Retention:
They help students review and consolidate newly learned concepts, improving long-term retention.
- Gap Identification:
They allow students to independently identify areas where they still have difficulty or misunderstandings, so they can review or ask for clarification.
- Active Learning:
They transform learning from a passive activity to an active attitude, encouraging students to critically reflect on the material and recall information.
- Immediate Feedback:
They provide instant feedback on performance, allowing students to correct errors in real time.
- Motivation and Self-Esteem:
Seeing their progress and passing quizzes can increase students' motivation and self-esteem.
- Preparation for Future Assessments:
They accustom them to the question format and the pressure of assessments, better preparing them for exams or larger tests.
- Personalized Learning Path:
Students can be shown which topics require more attention, allowing for more personalized learning.
- Progress Tracking (for Teachers):
Teachers can monitor the overall progress of the class and identify topics that may require re-explanation.
